To my mind, the 212se’s most accomplished sonic attribute was its ability to resolve spatial information, though this was most evident when it was used as a digital preamp. I’ve yet to hear more precise image outline focus or refined layering of the depth perspective.

I was utterly impressed by the fact that in the context of the systems I used it in, I could find no sonic signature to label it with. It seemed to convey all types of music with an equal hand. Drum’n’bass was executed with power, weight, space, and the old PRT (pace, rhythm and timing) seemed spot-on. .

Speaking of sound might suggest that the DAC212 had a sound of its own. But that wasn’t the case. The resultant sound was neither analytical nor bright, neither too heavy in the bass nor too transparent. It certainly was full and detailed but mostly, it was very well balanced.

Our impression of the DAC212 was of a well thought-out technical design which had been transformed into a well-built and crafted commercial production item.
